I want to assert painting as a vital and evolving form that is defined and redefined within the continuum of technology.
My paintings evolve from the physical act of mark-making to the formation of visual patches of color and value. These structures become holders for the ideas and emotions that are influencing the developing painting.
I don’t use formulaic strategies. So, it’s critical that I remain alert and open when painting.
I am looking for those opportunities that appear during the process that help give structure to whatever it is that is driving the painting. Through its formation, I discover what it is that I am paying attention to on the most intuitive level. These are matters that for me can only be mediated through the act of painting.
I am fascinated by the physical, visual, and psychological implications that a painting can contain, and embrace the potential that abstraction has for interaction and interpretation.
My aim is to experiment and to explore the unfamiliar, and through it, address what I am concerned about consciously as well as with what lies beneath the surface. Understanding that this activity is rigorous helps me navigate the pitfalls inherent in a process in which the unknowns far out-number the knowns.
